- October 19, 2007 (President's Speeches)President David J. Skorton's State of the University Address
We envision the new Center for a Sustainable Future as providing a way to bring together faculty, staff and students from across the university around three themes: energy (including new sources, efficiency, global climate change, mitigation and new businesses), environment (including biodiversity, water, resource management, agriculture and the built environment) and economic development (including poverty alleviation, water and food systems, infrastructure, institutions and education).

The City of Ithaca has a history of being passionate about living sustainably, as evidenced by the presence of various environmental groups and rallying around issues such as Redbud Woods and recently, the Cayuga Lake Cooling Project.
Cornell is adding to the efforts by creating the Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future to integrate research efforts dealing with sustainability across and beyond the Cornell community. The need for the center arose in part as a response to President David Skorton's signing of the President's Climate Commitment to a climate-neutral campus last year.
- Fall, 2007 (Communique)Q & A with Frank DiSalvo (PDF)
Last March, Provost Biddy Martin formed a steering committee charged with developing recommendations for a new effort in sustainability education and research. Frank DiSalvo, the John A. Newman Professor of Physical Science, chaired the committee. The group determined that in order to play a key role in addressing the planet's biggest issues in the next century, Cornell must create a sustainability-focused center that brings the entire Cornell community into the cause. Cornell has committed $1.6 million for program funding for the new Center for a Sustainable Future in its first year, in addition to supporting the cost of managing and administering the center. Interim Director Frank DiSalvo talks about sustainability and the center's goals for addressing issues on a global scale.
- May 17, 2006 (Cornell Chronicle)Sustainability task force recommends seed grant program to encourage collaborations
"Sustainability problems are real, immediate, and answers must be found if we are to have a just and humane future on this planet," warns a report issued by the provost's Task Force on Sustainability in the Age of Development. Cornell has great potential to lead the search for those answers, the report notes, but changes must be made to encourage more interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative and risky research, and a broader, more global reach.
